Where is the synthesis?

  • Synthesis in Ideas:
    - All pieces so far display motion in some way (either with literal depiction or through visual language and/or nonrepresentational form).
  • Synthesis in Materials:
    - There are common materials throughout my pieces, such as the use of cardboard, cutout figure silhouettes, and plaster/cloth.
  • Synthesis in Process:
    - All my pieces are following my guiding question of 'How do we view motion?', so my thought process is how can I exaggerate this motion enough to depict it in one still, so the viewer still understands what happening and can feel the direction.

Where are your hiccups?

(From my Sustained Investigation 5)
My original plan backfired when the cloth with plaster turned out to be too heavy to sit on the frames that I had built and actually ended up breaking the frames altogether. As I was contemplating what to do next, the plaster hardened on the cloth as I was holding it and turned into a really cool shape. It was completely unintentional but I used that as the base of the rest of the sustained investigation, which followed my guiding question really nicely and turned out really well.

(From my Sustained Investigation 6)
To create the shapes I needed for this sustained investigation, I draped plastered cloth on top of a plate and a bowl. Both of the tablewares were covered in saran wrap so they wouldn't be ruined and could be easily removed from the dried plaster. Unfortunately, the way that the cloth dried prevented both the pieces of tableware from being removed so I had to break the plate (with a hammer!). The bowl was too attached to the main form of the plaster, so I left it in there and spray painted it white to prevent the bowl's color from showing in the final piece.
