Woven Bowl

Woven Bowl Blog Post Construction Photo 1: Whole piece Photo 2: Rim/finish Photo 3: Detail Reflection:   What did you find satisfying about the weaving process?     It was very easy to pick up despite missing the lesson for it, and I finished the whole weave in one class.  What did you find difficult in the construction process?     Since I started this unit late, I didn't want to do a piece too big for me to handle. I chose a smaller bowel shape to make use of whatever time I had left in this unit to catch up, and I wanted to be smart with time management and decided to make smaller details. I went with leaves and vines. I stamped the leaves out of slab, and decided to use the leftover bits of slab for the vines, which probably was a bad idea because the slab was pretty dry, causing the vines to break when curled. Most of the extruding bits broke off when I glazed. Glaze Record Weave:     Mayco Elements Sahara Sands EL-125 Rim/Finish:...

I Longobardi by Sergio Toppi (year unknown),  found via the 2DGalleries online gallery. My sustained investigation theme is "depicting people's worst days/moments in a lighthearted way". Sergio Toppi has been a massive inspiration for me for years. He was primarily a comic artist whose illustrative works are unlike anything I've ever seen in any comic strips. As someone whose initial exploration of media outside of graphite was ink, I admire his stylization and sense of line immensely. This particular piece ( I Longobardi ) calls to me because of how strong the shapes are. The bold square that makes up the figures' shoulders is only broken by the figures' heads, sword, and book. This square acts as a container of sorts, taking up 3/4 of the composition and leading our eyes to any of the extruding elements. These elements are what tell the story, a stoic tension created by the square combined with the thinly lined fragility of the expressions and the hand lead...
